Trying to sum it up in a few words: a divinity is forced to protect a human whose fate is deeply linked to divinities and demons and ends up falling in love with said human. And as always, I love a drama that has its characters fighting against fate. Thanks to a magical bracelet, Seon-mi even manages to ‘enslave’ Oh-gong and make him her protector.Īs time goes by and feelings grow between them, they realise the fate of a Ssamjang is plain tragic and the two struggle to find a solution to protect her, themselves as an item as well as the world from a growing threat of demons. But with Ma-wang working against him, Seon-mi isn’t as easy a target as Oh-gong would have thought. And, of course, she’s Ssamjang.Īs fate would have it, she and Oh-gong had previously met in the past and the latter’s promise to protect her child-self has bound him to do so, even now that she’s all grown up, leading him to try and find a solution to free himself from the promise and finally be able to eat Ssamjang. Jin Seon-mi (Oh Yeon-seo) is a real estate agency’s CEO (human) who is cursed with being able to see ghosts and demons, having caused her to be isolated and considered crazy her whole life. Ma-wang has a poor past with Son Oh-gong and is reluctantly dragged into his affairs. He’s the eccentric CEO of celebrity agency Lucifer Entertainment and has thus taken the status of a public character. Woo Ma-wang (Cha Seung-won) is another divinity who wants to elevate his status in Heaven by acquiring good points – with a good, but hilariously fake, behaviour. Oh-gang wants to regain immortality, and the fastest way to do so is to eat a very special human, referred to as Ssamjang. I’m going to try to make the plot easy because it’s really messy:ĭivinity Son Oh-gong (Lee Seung-gi) has been punished by Heaven and exiled on Earth for his wrong-doings and prideful attitude. I’m usually more of a thriller-action-dramatic kind of k-drama person and tend to dislike humoristic ones, but Hwayugi is funny enough to have kept me going for the whole 20 episodes (20!). I kind of have trouble saying whether or not I really liked it. And if that did not convince you, Lee El also stars. Because it stars one of my all-time favourite actors, Cha Seung-won, alongside Lee Seung-gi (with whom he co-starred in You’re All Surrounded, and that was just perfect for my fangirl-self), I knew I would at least have a good time. Hwayugi – A Korean Odyssey might be one of the strangest Korean dramas I’ve ever watched.
